Choose the most appropriate image format for Office programs

Question regarding the choice of a specific format is always not an easy one to answer. There are hundreds of image formats, and there are thousands of situations where this or that format seems most appropriate. ImageConverter Plus helps the users not only view and process specific image formats, but also make them suitable for various needs. Microsoft Office is one of the most popular programs, so there often comes the question which formats are most appropriate. BMP – Windows bitmap format stores a single raster image in any color depth, from black-and-while to 24-bit color. This image format does not support compression though, and that’s why is not suitable for the web. In case you need to use images of photographic quality, the better choice is between PNG, JPEG, or TIFF. The PNG format stores a single raster image at any color depth. PNG is platform-independent and supports lossless compression, alpha channel, gamma correction, and interlacing. Still, JPEG surpasses PNG in its compression capabilities. JPEG compression can be increased or decreased, but the quality of the image is affected. JPEG works best for photo realistic images, but images with fewer colors or solid borders do not come out really of a high quality. The GIF image format stores single raster image data or multiple raster image data in 8-bits, or 256 colors. GIF supports transparency, compression, interlacing, and animation. It is widely used in the Internet. But GIF supports only a 256-color palette, so detailed pictures and photo-realistic images lose color information. The TIFF format stores a single raster image at any color depth. TIFF is widely used for printing purposes. It supports compression, but no matter how well it is compressed it is never suitable for the web. The TIFF format is an extensible format. It is possible to modify TIFF specification adding to its functionality for some specific needs.
