One of the most common algorithms used in computer graphics is LZW. LZW compresses image files to about one-half their original size, and does not sacrifice image data. This lossless method of data compression is found in several image file formats, such as GIF and TIFF. ImageConverter Plus always had a secured license with Unisyc Corporation to use its patented LZW compression technology. Today Unisys does not hold this patent, and there is no special permission needed for LZW algorithm.
